地元川越散策vol.1 Antique Flea Market in Kawagoe! Kotto Ichi 骨董市@川越成田山別院

These guys who have happy faces keep smiling at me from the display of antique and rummage sale. Today I came across the antique market when I was walking around my hometown. 28th of every month is the day for the market at the temple in Kawagoe. Many people visit there and do treasure hunting.

川越の街を歩いていて偶然出くわした骨董市。骨董の山からは七福神のハッピースマイルフェイスが私に微笑みかけてくれています。毎月28日に必ず行われる老舗川越骨董市を探索です！

This special antique flea market is held at Japanese temple “Narita-san Betsu-in Temple”  This temple is an annex of Chiba’s Narita-san Shin-shoji. Kawagoe’s temple is smaller and usually visited as part of a tour of four temples in the area. It is also known for the antique fair held on the 28th of each month.

ここ成田山別院は、千葉成田山新勝寺の別院で、嘉永6年（1853年）に創建されました。成田山新勝寺よりは小さいですが、観光客の溢れる川越の立寄スポットのひとつとして有名です。そして毎月最後の8がつく28日は蚤の市開催することで知られています。

This antique fair is a popular bazaar featuring over 100 vendors who sell antiques, junk, and everything in between. Offers some very good browsing and the occasional treasure.Each one offers something unique and even the same one surprises you every time you visit.

100社近くの骨董屋さんが集結し、お寺の敷地内にテントを張って青空蚤の市を開催しています。置物やお皿が多い中、西洋のアンティークマッチ、両目の塗られただるま、ぺこちゃん人形まで、骨董の種類はバラエティーに富んでおり、想像をかき立てられるものから、ノスタルジーいっぱいのものまで廻れば廻るほど面白いアンティークを発見できます。

I met a lot of visitors from US and Europe there. These guys, dad and the son were looking at the old table called “Chabu Dai.” It cost 7,000 yen. But they started negotiating the price and finally ended up getting discount 1,000yen! Then they bought it for 6,000yen! Done! As the buyer couldn’t understand what they asked in English..so I was between. I did a good job! Yay!  Nagotiation is one of the most interesting and challenging part for these event. Asking for discount is common. You’d better try.

外国人訪問者が多い川越だけに、この蚤の市でもたくさんの外国人を見かけました。このヨーロッパ人の親子はちゃぶ台に心がとまったようで、そこから離れません。7000円のちゃぶ台をディスカウントして6000円で落札していました。「僕は大阪にいたからディスカウントしないと買い物したくないんだよ〜」と言っていた不思議親子です。蚤の市では値段交渉も醍醐味のひとつ。外国人にまで浸透していたとは！

I feel Kotto Ichi is a kind of treasure hunting. Today I found a great vintage poster! TORASAN! and next to this, you can see another one saying “Tokyo Story.” The poster is from Ozu Yasujiro’s best film.

私が興奮したのは、とらさんのポスター！、、、もそうですが、その横にあった小津監督の「東京物語」。これは欲しい〜！！！

These are old ads for medical and cosmetic products. Pomade and skin cream. I guess from the Showa era. Somehow it makes me feel nostalgic.

ボンカレー的なブリキの広告！ポマードとスキンクリームです。色といいフォントといいノスタルジー満載なアンティーク！なにしろカタカナが右から読みですから。

Traditional clothes like kimono and beautiful obi are very popular here. Although kimono usually are very expensive, used kimono here can be as cheap as 500 or 1,000 yen. There is no better place to go bargain hunting. Do make time to visit these wonderful mountain of treasures!

蚤の市では着物もたくさん見かけました。これを宝とみるか、ガラクタと思うかは本人次第。タイムスリップしたような不思議な感覚を久しぶりに体験できました。
