The red-brick Tokyo Station finally opened!!

2012.10.03

After 5 year restoration project, Tokyo Station finally opened this week! It returned as the iconic landmark like original look in 1914. The picture above is inside of this renovated station dome. Isn’t that beautiful? They are painted egg-yolk yellow with reliefs of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. The original structures were replaced by angled roofs after the world war Ⅱ.

A loooooot of Japanese people were waiting so long for this new red brick Tokyo Station. Since they have opened, people come visit and celebrate this building!

This picture is from the outside of the first picture. All red-brick! The domes, at the northern and southern ends of the building, were restored to their original 1914 design.

Visitors whip out cameras and mobile phones to snap shots of the restored dome ceiling on. It is funny and I was one of them!

Everyone has his own memory here especially older people. During the war, the station retained its prominent role, processing some 5 million conscripts, and in the later years employing women to fill in for the missingmen. The station even opened a high school to cater to these young women, many no doubt simple villagers.

One thing that really amaze me is a travel information center for foreign visitors opened. I’m always worried about visitors from abroad.  Bacause most of Japanese people are very sweet and kind for visitors though, they don’t speak English. Not all signs are translated. But now we have special service center! Yay! So you can always visit Japan without worries.
